Whitepaper Download: Publishing in an Agile World

Here at WebWorks, we are hearing from an increasing number of professionals who are adopting an Agile software development model, and as a result wondering how they can adapt their content publishing model to suit.

To help answer that question we have put together a short white paper on "Publishing in an Agile World.". We illustrate how ePublisher’s three stage workflow: Design, Capture and Apply, can make the task even easier.

Making the Changing Industry Landscape Work for You

The technical documentation industry is changing rapidly. The old model of technical writers working in isolation, or in a separate centralized documentation group is disappearing.

Changing workflows, such as the agile development model are fueling the move toward a more cross functional and collaborative authoring team approach.

While some of these types of models may talk about decreasing the amount of traditional documentation, they all still require solid content, and the skills and knowledge of people who are experienced in content strategies and content management.

In fact even if the demand for traditional documentation is decreasing, the demand for content is increasing.

This shift is a great opportunity for those with skills in content development, strategy and management, as well as publishing (especially multi-channel publishing) to step up and take a leadership role.

Think about how your unique mix of skills and experience can benefit your organization. Become familiar with new workflows and processes and determine how you can make a difference.

Is Your Online Help a Security Risk?

virus.jpg
It may not be something you think about every day, but every technical communicator should consider whether their online help poses a serious threat to their company and users. Traditionally, online help is generated once, delivered with a product or pushed out to remain stagnant. Left alone and unsecured, these documents become increasingly vulnerable to hackers and malicious software.

On December 15th WebWorks issued a Security Advisory for our proprietary online help product, WebWorks help. This was a situation we took very seriously and ensured that our most recent product release (ePublisher 2009.3) included fixes and updates to remedy the situation and remove the vulnerability going forward.

During this process we learned that several vendors have been similarly affected with security issues in recent years, but what really caught our attention was a comment from a member of the community: “I never considered that my online help could be a potential attack vector!”

In light of our desire to bring this issue to the forefront of our industry, we are hosting several events over the next few weeks to discuss the issue of online security in general and the threats posed to online Help and similar documentation systems.

·         Our first Webinar event scheduled for January 20th is already full. Due to high demand, we holding a subsequent Webinar on Wednesday, February 10rd at 3:00pm CT. You may register for the Webinar at: http://tinyurl.com/yecqd7d

·         In addition to the generic security risk webinar, on January 27th we will be hosting a Webinar to answer questions and discuss the recent WebWorks Help 5 security advisory. You may register for the WebWorks Help 5 security advisory at: http://bit.ly/6yEE8c

Tips & Tricks: Backwards Compatibility in ePublisher 2009.3

Did you know that you can take advantage of all the great improvements and benefits of the latest version of ePublisher without having to upgrade your production projects developed in an earlier version?

With 2009.3 when you open a project developed in an earlier version of ePublisher you are automatically presented with a drop down menu from which to select the base version you are working from. Just import the project, select a version and go. At anytime during a projects development you can also change the base version directly in the Project Settings dialog accessed via the Projects menu.

This allows you to use 2009.3 to try out different format features without having to actually switch versions – a great way to prototype new deliverables and new output formats like publishing to a wiki.
