Microsoft HTML Help : About HTML Help

About HTML Help

Based on the Dynamic HTML template, the Microsoft HTML Help template produces output that conforms to the HTML 4 and XHTML 1.0 standards and uses Cascading Style Sheets that conform to the CSS1 standard. In addition, the Microsoft HTML Help template produces output files that are specifically required for the HTML Help format.

In HTML Help, authors compile a collection of source files into a help project file which is the base by which a compiled help (.chm) file is created. Opening the .chm file will access the HTML Help text.

During compilation, HTML Help Workshop uses the help project (.hhp) file to determine how HTML topic files, contents files (.hhc), index files (.hhk), image files, and any other elements you have added to the project file will look in the single, compressed help file. If any errors are found during the compilation, compiler messages are generated that point a help author to the problems.

*

Generally, if a modification an author wishes to make is not detailed in this document or the ePublisher Pro User Guide, details will be provided through HTML Help Workshop.

HTML Help consists of an online Help Viewer, related help components, and help authoring tools in the form of HTML Help Workshop. The Help Viewer uses Microsoft Internet Explorer to display help content. It supports HTML, ActiveX, Java scripting languages, and .jpg, .gif, and .png image files.
