Adding Functional Elements to Online Content : Modifying Cross-References

Modifying Cross-References

Cross-references help users navigate through your online content. All cross-references are automatically converted to hypertext links in the online content.

In most cases, however, cross-references in your online version may use a different format than your printed version. For example, page numbers are generally not included in online cross-references.

ePublisher enables you to add, edit, and/or delete cross-reference formats for your online output, through the Cross-Reference Editor.

The Name column shows either the cross-references formats used or a set of default cross-reference formats depending on the type of source document you are converting. These formats are hidden building blocks or codes that come directly from your source document. If you would like to find out how to interpret them, see the Help documentation for the application that was used to create the source document. The Value column shows the corresponding online cross-reference formats.

When you open the Cross Reference Editor for the first time for a given project, the formats in the Value column will all match those in the Name column because ePublisher assumes you want the content of your online output to be the same as in your source documents.

To add cross-reference formats:

*

This option is only available for select source document types.

1.

Choose Format > Cross Reference Rules...

2.

Choose the Document type, in which you will be editing the cross-references. You will see a list of document types that you are able to generate.

3.

Click the Add New Cross Reference button to add a cross-reference format.

4.

In the Name field, type the format on which you would like ePublisher to perform a replacement. For example, if you want to remove from the online output the phrase "see page" followed by a page number, you might enter:

see page {PAGEREF \h}

You can find the correct syntax for the search pattern by inspecting your source document for the values.

5.

In the Value field, type the format or text that will replace the format in the Name field. Leaving the Value field empty will replace the format with nothing.

6.

Click OK to save the new name and replacement patterns and close the dialog.

To modify cross-reference formats:

1.

Choose Format > Cross Reference Rules...

2.

Choose the Document type, in which you will be editing the cross-references. You will see a list of document types that you are able to generate.

3.

Double-click on an existing cross-reference format you would like to modify.

4.

In the Value field, type the format or text that will replace the format. Leaving the Value field empty will replace the format with nothing.

5.

Click OK to save the changes and close the dialog.

To rearrange cross-reference formats:

Use the Move Up and Move Down buttons to arrange the cross-reference formats in the order in which you want ePublisher to process them. ePublisher performs cross-reference operations in the order in which they appear in the dialog box.

To delete cross-reference formats:

If you are not using one of the formats shown in the Cross Reference Editor dialog, you can delete it by selecting the cross-reference format and clicking the Delete button.

Creating a Format Target

Every project must contain at least one format target or else you will not be able to generate output for your project.

To create a format target:

1.

In your ePublisher Pro project, select Project > Manage Format Targets.

2.

Click the Add button.

3.

Enter a name for the format target in the Name field.

4.

Select an output format for your format target from the Format Type dropdown list,.

*

The output formats available from the dropdown list are the ones already contained within your project.

5.

Click the OK button.

Selecting an Active Target

The active target refers to the format target that is currently selected for your project. Anytime you make modifications to your project, or generate output, ePublisher uses the active target.

To select the active target:

1.

In your ePublisher project, select Project > Active Target.

2.

Click on the dropdown button.

3.

Select an active target.
