ePublisher Pro Fundamentals : File Mapping

File Mapping

In ePublisher Pro, you can add any source documents that are of the formats: Microsoft Word, Adobe FrameMaker, DITA-XML, or XML that your installation of the XML adapter has been configured to handle by using file mappings; for example, you can add .txt files to your project. In order to do this, you would need to specify the adapter that ePublisher Pro would need to use in order to open the .txt file. In ePublisher Pro, an adapter refers to an interface that handles specific input formats such as Adobe FrameMaker, Microsoft Word, DITA-XML; in the case of documents authored in Adobe FrameMaker or Microsoft Word, it is the application that you will use to open the source documents that determines what mapping to use. For XML source files, you may want to use the XML adapter.

The XML adapter is configured out-of-the-box to support DITA-XML, however it can be configured within a Stationery to also support other XML file types. However, keep in mind that input formats other than DITA-XML may not be supported at this time by Quadralay’s Technical Support Team.

In your project, there is a File Mapping tab located under Edit > Preferences that will allow you to specify the adapter you would like to use for each file type.

By default, ePublisher Pro comes with a list of file extensions that are preset to use either Microsoft Word or Adobe FrameMaker. You have the ability to choose Adobe FrameMaker or Microsoft Word from the drop-down list of adapters for certain file types, such as .txt files, or create user-defined file mappings and specify the adapter for those file types. However, certain file extensions, such as .book, .fm, and .bk files, are unique to a specific adapter; in this case, .book, .fm, and .bk files files can only be opened with Adobe FrameMaker. Other file extensions, such as .rtf, .xml, and .doc, are specific to Microsoft Word; therefore, the adapter for these file extensions must be specified as Microsoft Word. If a certain file type cannot normally be opened with either Microsoft Word or Adobe FrameMaker, then ePublisher Pro will display an error message if you try to generate output or a preview with those files.

If you only have a license key for either ePublisher Pro for Word or ePublisher Pro for FrameMaker, then you can only use the adapter that is inline with your version of ePublisher Pro. Although the option to choose either adapter may be available, you will not be able to generate a preview or output with the file if you do not have a corresponding license key for that adapter.

For example, if you have a license key for ePublisher Pro for FrameMaker, and you add a user-defined file extension, such as HTML with Microsoft Word specified as the adapter, you will be able to add the HTML file to your project; however, you will receive an error stating: No valid license key was found to enable Microsoft Word support.

Modifying a File Mapping

By default, ePublisher Pro provides you with a default list of file mappings; each file extension has been preset to use a specific adapter. For file extensions that can be opened with either Microsoft Word or Adobe FrameMaker, such as .txt files, you can associate, or map, the adapter for the file extension.

To map file extensions to a Word or FrameMaker adapter:

1.

From the main menu, choose Edit > Preferences.

2.

Click on the File Mappings tab.

3.

From the list of extensions, choose the file extension for which you would like to specify the adapter.

4.

From the drop-down list of adapters, choose the adapter that is most appropriate for that file extension: Word or FrameMaker.

5.

Click OK to apply the changes.

Creating a New File Mapping

If there is a file extension that you would like to use, but it is not available in the default list of file extensions, you can create a new file mapping. A file mapping refers to the file extension and its corresponding adapter; to create a file mapping, you basically add a new file extension and associate, or map, the file extension to an adapter. You can use this user-defined file mapping in order to specify whether the file will be opened with Microsoft Word or with Adobe FrameMaker. When you create a new file mapping, the mapping will be retained and applied for all your subsequent projects that you open; therefore, if you have specified that Microsoft Word will be the adapter for .txt files, then by default, each subsequent project that is opened will have .txt files mapped to Microsoft Word.

When you choose an adapter for a file extension, you need to verify that the file extension can be opened with the adapter outside of ePublisher Pro. If the file type cannot be normally opened with the adapter, then ePublisher Pro will not be able to process that document using the adapter. If you specify an adapter that is incompatible with the file type, then ePublisher Pro will display an error. Depending on whether you are trying to generate output or generate a preview, ePublisher Pro will display a different error if you are trying to perform one of these functions on an invalid file type.

To create a file mapping:

1.

From the main menu, choose Edit > Preferences.

2.

Click on the File Mappings tab.

3.

Click on the New button .

4.

For the File Extension field, type in the file extension that you would like to add; for example, you can add HTML as a file extension.

5.

From the Tool drop-down list, specify the adapter which ePublisher Pro will use to open that file type. For example, if you are creating a file mapping for HTML files, then you can specify Microsoft Word as the adapter.

6.

Click OK to create the new file mapping.

To delete a file mapping:

1.

From the main menu, choose Edit > Preferences.

2.

Click on the File Mappings tab.

3.

Click to select the file mapping that will be deleted.

4.

Click on the Remove button to delete the file mapping.
